Adjacent Space is a 501(c)(3) non profit based out of Birmingham, AL aiming to provide local impact but also virtually across the US.  Our mission is to promote space, access and education for the Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing community.  See more about us here:

This is a grant based position and will continue to be filled until grant money is unavailable.

 

Adjacent Space is seeking a Deaf community member to post events on a weekly basis on our Facebook and Website calendar. This would promote our mission by investing into the Deaf Ecosystem and would amplify accessibility throughout our local communities by advertising:

 

  1. Deaf community based events (events hosted by the Deaf community and first language used at the event is American Sign Language)

  2. Accessible Events (first language is spoken but an interpreter is provided)

  3. Captioned Events

  4. Adjacent Space Events

 

Adjacent Space will provide a brief training on how to post these events and then the individual will be responsible for continuously updating the calendar, working on their own and billing for their hours.

 

The individual will be responsible for:

 

  • Seeking events happening in the Alabama community that fit the criteria of the calendar to post

  • Given event information from Adjacent Space to post.

  • Working on their own to post these events.

  • Reporting how many events each week that they posted with an invoice.

  • Checking the event email inbox on a weekly basis for event information or updated information. 


 

Basic Qualifications

Access to a computer or tablet.

Ability to use Adjacent Space’s website and Facebook with ease and minimal training.

Assertiveness to locate events.

Ability to actively post on a weekly basis.

Resident in Alabama.

Fluent in American Sign Language preferred.

 

Pay 

Adjacent Space will pay monthly once invoiced. 

$12 per event posted on both calendars (Facebook and Website). If there is a change to an event already posted and created, an additional $5.

Paid as a 1099 contractor. 

A minimum requirement of five events must be posted per month (does not have to be an event in that month) in order to remain active.

Term: 1 year commitment

 

Minimum meeting time per year: Six times (every two months) scheduled at two hours for each meeting. The committee can determine whether additional meetings in between are needed.  Meetings will occur on Zoom. Meetings are requested to be established at the first meeting for the remainder of the year.  If an additional meeting needs to be added, it is requested that the Adjacent Space team be notified two weeks in advance, if possible. 

 

Goals of Community Project Committee:

Residents of Alabama will develop 1-2 projects that align with Adjacent Space’s mission and can be accomplished within 1 year (the term of the board).  These project(s) will reflect the needs of the community (can be local or state wide) and can include only the Community Project Committee or the community at large.  Adjacent Space believes that, through partnership and teamwork, community members are better equipped to identify community barriers and resolutions through these projects. 

 

Actionable items:

  • Develop project(s) within the first or second committee meeting and send to Adjacent Space President and Vice President for approval.  See project guideline document for more detailed information. 

  • Document project with measurable strategies and goals and email progress notes after each meeting to info@adjacentspace.org

  • Oversee the development of these project’s strategy and vision and continue to monitor the projects performance, outcomes, and impact.

  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in 90% of the committee meetings. Stay in contact with the group.

  • Review the project’s performance for diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments and goals

  • Set a fundraising strategy, if any fundraising effort is needed

  • Serve as an active participant for the project

  • Foster an inclusive group environment and community

  • Sets project deadlines and meet them (or communicate if deadlines are not feasible)

 

Committee Member Composition

Adjacent Space is seeking members that may fulfill the following type of community roles (as an identity or resource) in order to have both variety of perspective but also to share in resources and strengthen community relationship.  

 

  • Located and reside in Alabama

  • Understands and be familiar with Adjacent Space’s mission and vision

  • A minimum of 51% of the board and attendance will be Deaf, hard of hearing or Deafblind

  • Reflecting various backgrounds and diversity in thought by potentially meeting one or more of the following identities, professions or roles.  This is not an exhausted list:

    • Deaf community individual not affiliated with a state agency

    • Non-white individual

    • Alabama School for the Deaf High School student

    • DeafBlind individual

    • Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) or Deaf Interpreter

    • Individuals who sign that may already have relationship with the Deaf community through family, friends or co-workers

    • Individuals who have experience in organization or project management

    • Child of Deaf Adult (CODA)

    • American Sign Language Interpreting Agency Owner

    • American Sign Language Interpreter

    • Hard of Hearing individual

    • Deaf business owner

    • Individual in Healthcare

    • LGBTQ Individual

    • Variety of ethnic background

 

 

Adjacent Space will provide:

  • An email inbox if deemed appropriate.

  • A Google Drive link if an email is not provided.

  • A Zoom link with unlimited minutes per meeting. 

  • The appropriate amount of interpreters for online, equitable meeting interactions. For up to 10 meetings.

Adjacent Space believes that through transparency and accountability, this board will provide stamina and balance to ensure longevity and continue to fulfill the mission of the organization. 

 

Actionable items:

  • Plan or confirm strategic goals and initiatives to advance Adjacent Space’s mission

  • Collect and share fundraising opportunities

  • Assess Adjacent Space and provide guidance when necessary

  • Ensure financial oversight and management

  • Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for Adjacent Space

  • Secure local and/or state partnerships necessary to support Adjacent Space

  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop action that achieve Adjacent Space’s mission and vision

  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in board meetings

  • Make time to attend Adjacent Space’s events (such as Think Tank meetings, or any other Adjacent Space-created events)

  • Send meeting minutes to info@adjacentspace.org no later than 48 hours after the meeting occurs

Board Member Composition:

Adjacent Space is looking for the following 

  • 7-12 members who are all proficient in American Sign Language

  • Located nationally

  • Reflecting various backgrounds and diversity in thought

  • Understands and be familiar with Adjacent Space’s mission and vision

  • A minimum of 51% of the board and attendance will be Deaf, hard of hearing or Deafblind

 

Adjacent Space will provide:

  • A designated email inbox if deemed appropriate.

  • A Google Drive link if an email is not provided.

  • A Zoom link with unlimited minutes per meeting. 

  • A brief report one week before the scheduled meeting including current financial information and any new relevant activities or projects.
