Deaf Organizations

Adjacent Space defines Deaf Organizations as organizations that hold a Deaf, Deafblind, or Hard of Hearing president and/or hold a 50% or more Deaf, Deafblind, or Hard of Hearing board in the state of Alabama.
Alabama Black Deaf Advocates
Alabama Black Deaf Advocates (ALBDA) is the local chapter of the non profit National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA) the official advocacy organization for thousands of Black Deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States. Black deaf leaders were concerned that Black Deaf and hard of hearing Americans are not adequately represented in leadership and policy decision-making activities affecting their lives so they established NBDA in 1982.
Mission
The Mission of the National Black Deaf Advocates is to promote the leadership development, economic and educational opportunities, social equality, and to safeguard the general health and welfare of Black deaf and hard of hearing people.
Membership includes Black Deaf and Hard of Hearing; parents of Black Deaf and Hard of Hearing children; professionals who work with Black Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth and adults; sign language interpreters; people of color; and other interested individuals and organizations.

Alabama Association of the Deaf
Alabama Association of the Deaf (AAD) is the local chapter of 501c3 organization The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) which is the nation’s premier civil rights organization of, by and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. Established in 1880, the NAD was shaped by deaf leaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and to have its interests represented at the national level.
