This month, the Alabama Association of the Deaf awarded Adjacent Space the Golden Hand Award, an award that was created by the National Association of the Deaf to recognize people and organizations who have contributed to their local and state Deaf communities. Adjacent Space received the award at the AAD yearly conference. We’re grateful and honored to have our work recognized, and we look forward to continuing to work with AAD on future projects!

PERSONAL MESSAGE ABOUT STEVE AUSTIN

[ID: a white man is wearing a black shirt and brown round glasses. He has a fade haircut. In the background there are three dark doors. The background shows a tan patterned wallpaper.]

A few weeks ago many of us received the shocking news about our community member, Steve Austin, passing away. Some of you may have known him for a long time as an interpreter, mental health advocate, colleague or friend. At the start of this organization, Steve willingly donated his time, energy and positive thoughts towards the inception of what we know today as Adjacent Space. When Adjacent Space had no funding he offered to interpret pro bono in order for Adjacent Space to create connections in the community and begin its journey.  Each volunteer and member of this community plays an important part of the positive change that we can all create, and we recognize Steve for the time he gave us.

If you're looking for a way to remember and honor Steve, the best way you can do so is to take care of your own mental health. If you need assistance, check out https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/find-help/

If you’d like to donate to the GoFundMe to benefit Steve’s family, please click here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/steve-austin-memorial-fund-family-support
